A crowdfunding campaign to support sarcoidosis research
20 November 2025
The Grenoble Alpes University Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Biosciences, and the Cœur Couleur association (an association dedicated to sarcoidosis in France) are joining forces to launch a crowdfunding campaign to advance science and finance research dedicated to understanding, treating, and preventing sarcoidosis, a rare disease for which there is still no treatment.
What is sarcoidosis?
Sarcoidosis is a rare inflammatory disease that affects approximately 1 in 10,000 people worldwide each year, and its incidence appears to be increasing. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity. It is characterized by small clusters of immune cells called granulomas. In more than 9 out of 10 cases, the lungs are affected. However, the disease can also affect other organs, such as the lymph nodes, skin, and eyes. When the heart is affected, the disease becomes much more serious, as it can be life-threatening. There are two forms: an acute form, which is often benign, and a chronic form, which progresses more slowly and can worsen. Today, the cause of sarcoidosis remains unclear. However, exposure to certain particles, particularly metals, in the workplace is suspected. Familial cases have also been observed, suggesting a role for environmental or genetic factors.
