PFAS can affect placental health during pregnancy

10 October 2025

Omnipresent in our daily lives, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are associated with adverse effects on pregnancy and fetal development, according to several recent publications. In a new study of 367 pregnant women, researchers from Inserm, the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA), the CEA, and the Grenoble Alpes University Hospital (CHU) examined the impact of these pollutants on the placenta. Published in the journal Environment International, their findings suggest a link between exposure to several PFAS and damage to this organ, which facilitates exchanges between the mother's blood and that of the fetus.
